Son dies after mother crashes into tree on Elizabeth St

BROWNSVILLE, TX – A mother has been convicted of intoxication manslaughter for her son’s death after she crashed into a tree on Elizabeth St on May 6, 2021.

According to Valley Central, Ernestina Garcia, 31, lost control of her Ford Expedition and collided with a tree around 1 a.m. First responders transported her 13-yer-old son to an area hospital, where he later died.

Officers arrested Garcia after determining she had a BAC beyond the legal limit.

Garcia was indicted in Cameron County district court on July 1, 2021. On Monday, Garcia accepted a plea deal and was convicted of intoxication manslaughter. She has been sentenced to seven years in state jail. Garcia has been credited with the 320 days she has spent in county jail.
