Paraquat & Parkinson’s Disease
Paraquat Causing Parkinson’s Disease? What to Know
If you work often in your yard or garden and use herbicides, you should know about the Paraquat lawsuit. This is a case about the popular herbicide Paraquat potentially being linked to the development of Parkinson’s disease. While Paraquat may be an effective herbicide, it’s been linked to brain disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
About the Paraquat Studies
Paraquat has been reported multiple times as a substance that can cause Parkinson’s. The Michael J. Fox Foundation—named for the actor who developed Parkinson’s disease at 29—released a report in August 2020 detailing the numerous risks of Paraquat when it comes to Parkinson’s development. Since then, many companies banned Paraquat, but the United States has not.
Dangers of Pesticides
Roundup has been shown to contain glyphosate, a compound that the International Agency for Research on Cancer has called a “probable human carcinogen.” If something is carcinogenic, it means that it has the propensity and capability to cause cancers. Paraquat, on the other hand, shares a similar chemical structure to MPTP, a compound in heroin. Both can cause Parkinson’s disease.
Who is at Risk?
Diseases from Roundup, Paraquat, and other pesticides can affect not only people who use herbicides in their home gardens. These chemicals can also very dangerously impact the people who work in agricultural careers, and the American Journal of Epidemiology stated that exposure to Paraquat within 1,600 feet of a home can increase that household’s chance of developing Parkinson’s.
What to Do if You’re Affected
If you or a loved one have used Roundup or Paraquat in your lawn care routine, or work often in places that could expose you to these herbicides, and later developed Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Parkinson’s, or another disease, you may be eligible for compensation for the cost you’ve incurred. You may be able to claim medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of work or wages, and more. Contact an experienced personal injury attorney or a lawyer familiar with herbicide personal injury lawsuits for help.
