GALVESTON, TX – The body of a 20-year-old Crosby firefighter, Kent Zavala, was recovered from the water on Tuesday morning.
The tragic accident happened Sunday on I-45 northbound near the lift bridge over the Galveston Causeway. According to local news, Zavala and his friends attempted to avoid a vehicle that cut them off. When they swerved, they ended up hitting the guardrail.
Zavala, a dog, and the front seat passenger were ejected through the soft top of their Jeep and into the water. A boater on the scene quickly rescued the dog but he and other boaters could not find the firefighter, even as they widened their search.
The Coast Guard continued their search with Texas Equusearch into Monday night. It was Equusearch that finally located his body in the 7800 block of Broadway around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Two other victims were taken to the hospital on Sunday with injuries related to the accident.
Zavala is remembered fondly by his family, friends, coworkers, and community.
