The Importance of Uninsured Motorist Coverage

If you’re a driver, you must know all your insurance options. According to a 2021 report from the Insurance Research Council, about one in eight drivers drives without insurance coverage. The bad news is that if any of this one in eight drivers gets in an accident with you. You may incur hefty fines and could be out of luck on getting any payment from their insurance, as they do not have any. The good news is that there is a coverage option that protects you from those who do not retain auto insurance: uninsured motorist coverage.

What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured motorist coverage is a coverage option that pays for medical bills and expenses for you and your passengers if you are struck by a driver who does not have liability car insurance. You do not have enough liability car insurance, or if their insurance company denies coverage or goes out of business. It’s a contingency plan for those in an accident with someone who cannot obtain insurance coverage. It can pay for medical bills, funeral expenses, pain, and suffering as defined by your state’s laws lost wages, and can pay for car damages in some cases.

Types of Uninsured Motorist Coverage

There are several different types of uninsured motorist coverage. Each of which comes with varying coverage levels if you are in an accident. Insurance companies offer uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage (UM or UMBI). This coverage pays out when an uninsured, at-fault driver causes an auto accident. There is also uninsured motorist property damage coverage (UMPD). This covers your car’s damage if someone without insurance hits and damages it. There are also two uninsured motorist coverage variations called underinsured motorist bodily injury (UIM or UIMBI) and underinsured motorist property damage (UIMPD). These are the counterparts to their uninsured variations. These last two types of coverage payout when a driver does not have enough liability insurance to cover the damage.

If you are hit by someone uninsured, it’s not the end of the road for you. Even if someone in an accident is underinsured, there are coverage options. Options that you can get that can kick in to assist with costs associated with the accident.
