Driver hits police car in Rio Grande City

RIO GRANDE CITY, TX – A 20-year-old man crashed his car into a police officer’s vehicle on eastbound Highway 83 on Tuesday, May 5.

According to Local 23 KVEO, police officers responded to reports of a reckless driver near the intersection of 2nd Street and San Antonio Street. They located the man in a red Dodge Charge on Highway 83, where he was unsafely passing vehicles on the highway.

The Dodge then entered oncoming traffic and hit the police patrol vehicle. The accident occurred on Highway 83 near El Paseo Drive.

The police officer in the vehicle was uninjured in the accident. The driver, who police identified at Jovan Lee Garcia, sustained minor injuries. Garcia was transported to a local hospital, but he refused medical treatment.

The Rio Grande City Police Department has arrested Garcia and charged him with reckless driving as well as possession of volatile chemicals and a controlled substance.
