Police arrest driver involved in fatal hit-and-run

SAN MARCOS, TX – Antonio Rene Alonzo, 23, surrendered to the San Marcos Police Department on Wednesday after police issued a warrant for his arrest in connection to a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian.

On February 29, a Chevrolet pick-up truck hit and killed a pedestrian that was walking near 200 South Guadalupe Street, according to KSAT 12. The driver fled the scene after the accident without providing aid to the pedestrian.

Police pronounced the pedestrian, 69-year-old Eligio Vasquez, dead on the scene of the accident.

Several months after the accident, a citizen recognized the pick-up truck and contacted the San Marcos Police Department. Using the citizen’s tip, the police were able to identify Alonzo as the driver and issue a warrant for his arrest.

Alonzo turned himself over to the police on May 21 and was arrested for the accident. Alonzo was charged but he was released on a $10,000 bond.
