Update: Family of inmates claim distracted, erratic driving led to prison bus crash

GEORGE WEST, TX – Inmates who were injured in a prison bus crash claim the driver was driving erratically and was using his cell phone at the time of the accident, Fox San Antonio reports.

The bus was leaving from the Lopez Unit in Edinburg to the Dominguez Unit in San Antonio. It was occupied by forty-four inmates when it crashed on October 1 around 7:30 a.m. Despite the heavy rains pouring down at that time, inmates say the driver was speeding and using his cell phone before the incident.

After the crash, family members claim authorities did not contact them concerning the bus accident. However, officials from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice say they did contact everyone.

Multiple inmates claim they have not yet received medical attention for their injuries sustained during the crash.

The exact location where the bus rolled over is unclear.
