Woman arrested in connection to fatal San Antonio crash in January

SAN ANTONIO, TX –  A woman was taken into custody in connection to a suspected DWI collision that took the life of two parents and injured four children earlier this year.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, the incident took place on January 3rd at about 6 p.m. within the 12000 block of Bandera Road near Diamond K Trail.

Police say 20-year-old Elena Mae Carranza was traveling north on the freeway when she struck a Kia Sedona as it was crossing the roadway. Both adults in the Kia, 54-year-old Craig Smith and 39-year-old Susan Smith, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

The four children in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Carranza was also hospitalized and intubated as a result of her injuries.

Upon further investigation, Carranza’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit at the time of the crash. She has since been arrested and is facing charges including intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault.
