What is a Release?

There are certain legal buzzwords that attorneys throw around that the client may not fully understand. One of these legal words is a ā€œReleaseā€. But what is a release? What am I releasing? When does a release need to be signed?

In short, a release is a legal document that you sign when you agree to settle a claim against someone else. For example, if you were in an automobile collision that was the result of another driver, you have a claim against them. You have a legal right to sue that person unless you sign a release. You maintain that right to sue the individual until the statute of limitations runs, or you sign the release. One must know that signing the release, usually in the exchange for a settlement, ends any and all claims that you possess.
