Drag racer collides with crowd of spectators, killing 2 children at Kerrville Municipal Airport

KERRVILLE, TX – According to KRGV, a drag race held at Kerrville Municipal Airport on Sunday turned deadly when one of the racers lost control on the runway and plowed through a crowd of spectators, killing two children.

The driver was nearing the finish line when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off-course into the crowd. Two boys, a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old, died in the collision. Eight other people were injured.

One of the victims, a 46-year-old woman, was critically injured. Another victim, a 26-year-old man, is in unknown condition. Two other children, a 4-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl, were hospitalized for precautionary evaluations.

The eighth of a mile-long course was lined with water-filled plastic barriers. The barriers did not go past the finish line, which put spectators in danger when the vehicles attempted to slow down at the end of the race. Spectators were about 15 ft away from the track during the event. Organizers told them to stay off the asphalt for their safety.

Around 3,500 people were at the event, which was called “Airport Race Wars 2”.
