This past weekend a single vehicle accident left many of its passengers injured and took the life of one. Police reported that a blue Ford Explorer had flipped near the Gollihar Road exit off Crosstown Expressway at around 9 p.m. Saturday. The Explorer had turned and lost control ejecting four people from the vehicle including a 3-year old baby. The accident left two 13-year old girls in critical condition and took the life of an 11-year old girl. The driver along with two other people fled the scene.
Caller-Times reports that the police have identified the driver as Michael A. Ramon, who is on the Nueces County Top 10 Most Wanted List for unrelated narcotics, arson, and burglary charges. The other two have recently been located and brought in for questioning. One was interviewed and then released, the other taken into custody for violating his parole. The two that police held for questioning had mentioned that they were unaware about the severity of the injuries when they fled the scene. One of the two had also mentioned that they were under the influence and were worried they would be charged with responsibility for the crash. Police are still looking for the driver.
In the State of Texas, it is a serious criminal charge when a person leaves the scene of an accident involving death, injury, or property damage. Since September 1st, 2013, leaving the scene of an accident has been considered a second-degree felony and is punishable up to 20 years in a state prison, the same as intoxicated manslaughter.
